How would I qualify for extenuating circumstances?

We appreciate that occasionally things can go wrong with your health or personal life that can impact your studies. The University calls these “Extenuating Circumstances” and has a process to support you. Fit to Sit explains what to do if things go wrong and where to look for help.

The three main options for extenuating circumstances are:

  • You can apply for an extension by completing a RE1 form and submitting this to your module leader for their consideration. However, your module leader can only grant an extension of up to 5 working days.
  • You may also request to defer your assessment. You can apply for defer your assessment by completing the DE1 form along with any supporting evidence and submitting this to the relevant email address on the DE1 form. Your application will be considered by our Fit To Sit team and they will contact you directly with their decision.
  • You may also wish to consider applying for Retrospective Extenuating Circumstances. Extenuating Circumstances permits our Board of Examiners to take your circumstances into account when deciding on your award or progression on the course. If you wish to apply for ECs you should submit the attached DE1 form along with supporting evidence to the email address on the form.

For all of the above, the Global Online Support team can advise the deadline to submit these applications and provide you with the documentation if required.
