What form of Referencing does the University use?

The University has Referencing Guidelines you must adhere to for all work and submissions.

Each school has its own referencing guidelines.   Students should follow the guidelines of the school responsible for the module assigning a particular piece of coursework, rather than the school responsible for their course. Details of the expected referencing style will also be noted in assessment briefs and on Moodle pages. If in doubt about which guidelines to use, please ask your relevant module leader.  A link to each schools referencing guidelines can be found at https://my.napier.ac.uk/your-studies/improve-your-academic-and-study-skills/referencing-and-academic-integrity/referencing-guidelines

If you find these guidelines a little overwhelming we would recommend accessing the above link, and there is a section on the right-hand menu entitled “Referencing” which gives you step-by-step instructions.

Here are some referencing tips:

  • Be wary of cutting and pasting – you risk committing plagiarism by accident.
  • Take notes in your own words. (This also helps you learn).
  • Note down all your references as you read, and organise them as you go along.
  • Make sure your citations match up with the reference list at the end.
  • Follow standard conventions, and ensure your references are: Complete, Consistent and Correct.
  • Always check the referencing guidelines for your assignment.

You may also wish to contact your tutor who can further advise you on appropriate referencing for the submission.
